Finding a starting chapter

A child who already knows half of a course should not sit through the half they know. This tool finds the right place to begin: it asks a few questions from each chapter, starting at chapter one, and stops where the questions stop being easy.

How to run it

  1. Open Family progress in the menu and press Find a starting chapter. (Or go straight to the address cogitolearning.com/placement.)
  2. Pick the course — Grade 3 Math, say.
  3. Let your child answer. Three questions a chapter, ten minutes at most, usually less.
  4. At the end it names a chapter: this is where learning should start. One tap goes there.

What it does not do

It marks nothing as done and passes nothing. The chapter checks are still there to be earned properly, and every earlier chapter stays open. This is a compass, not a test — there is nothing to fail.
