Step 1: Let's Learn

Read it, or press Listen and follow the words.

The same amount can be made from different coins.

Two ways to 70p

50p and 20p is 70p. Seven 10p coins is 70p too. Same money.

Fewest coins

Start with the biggest coin that fits. Then the next biggest. That uses the fewest coins.

Fewest means the smallest number of coins.

Parts make a whole

50 and 20 make 70. That is a number bond, with coins.

Step 2: Try It Yourself

Two parts make the amount.

Make 70p from two coins. Then make 60p. Then 35p.
First coin and Second coin
Amount

50 and 20 make 70.

Step 3: In Real Life

A bus in Dublin

The fare is €1.50. You could pay three 50-cent coins. Or one €1 coin and one 50-cent coin. The driver is happier with two.

Step 4: Watch an Example

One step at a time.

Sofia needs 90 cents for a stamp.

  1. Step 1

The biggest coin that fits is 50c. That leaves 40c.

Question 1 of 2

50p and 20p. How many pence?

Question 2 of 2

To use the fewest coins, which coin do you pick first?

What You Learned

  • One amount, many ways to make it.
  • Biggest coin first uses the fewest.
  • 50 and 20 make 70.
For the grown-up

Making an amount is number bonds in disguise: 70 is 50 and 20, or 20 and 50, or 10 seven times. A child who can say the bonds to 100 can make the money.

Real coins help more than pictures here. Put 50p, 20p, 10p and 5p on the table and ask for 35p, then 45p, then the same amount a second way.
