In the United Kingdom, money is pounds and pence.

Pence are the small coins. 100 of them make one pound.

Two ways to write it

Pence use the letter p: 5p. Pounds use the sign £: £1.

A pound is a hundred

100 pence make £1. Ten 10p coins make £1 too.

The coins to know

Pence coins: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p. Then the £1 and £2 coins.

Step 2: Try It Yourself

Each flat is 100 pence. That is one pound. Try 230.

For the grown-up

This course is for families outside the United States. It teaches the same money ideas as Grade 2 Math, chapter 7, in pounds, euros and rupees. Nothing here needs the dollar lessons first.

Children confuse the number of coins with their value: five coins called five pence. Count the coins and count the value, and say both numbers out loud.
