A single heart muscle cell in a dish twitches, on its own, at its own rhythm. A heart pumps 5 liters a minute for eighty years without stopping.

Where does the pumping come from, if no single cell pumps?

Cells are the base level. A cell of one kind does one kind of job.

Similar cells

Several tissues arranged together to do a job none of them does alone — a stomach, a heart, a leaf.

Similar cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form systems, and systems form an organism. Each level is built from the one below and does something the parts cannot do alone.

No single heart cell pumps blood, and no single neuron thinks. The property belongs to the arrangement, not to the parts, which is why studying the parts alone is never enough.

An organ is just a big pile of the same cells.

Emergence is not a biology curiosity. A single water molecule is not wet, a single neuron does not think, and a single bird does not flock. Whenever parts are arranged and interact, the whole can have properties that no part has — which is why studying the parts alone is never quite enough.
