Geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere are a way of organizing study. Almost every phenomenon worth explaining — soil, weather, erosion, climate — happens at an interface between two of them.

Nothing belongs to only one

A tree is biosphere rooted in geosphere, drawing hydrosphere and exchanging with atmosphere. The divisions are analytical conveniences, not boundaries in the world.

Step 5: Why Saharan Dust Fertilises the Amazon

The same idea somewhere new.

Around 27 million tonnes of dust blow from the Sahara across the Atlantic each year, and the phosphorus in it is a significant input to Amazonian soils, which are otherwise strikingly poor in it. A geosphere process in one continent, carried by the atmosphere, sustains a biosphere on another. It is the clearest available case that sphere boundaries and geographic boundaries have nothing to do with each other.
