Two letters, one sound. Same idea as sh and ch, except made of vowels instead of consonants.
Usually you hear the first vowel’s name
Rain sounds like "rayn" — the a saying "ay". Boat sounds like "bote" — the o saying "oh".
There is an old saying for it
"When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." It is a rough guide, not a law.
And it is often wrong
Bread does not say "breed". Said does not say "sayed". Book does not say "boke". The saying fails a lot.
So treat it as a first guess
Try the first vowel’s name. If the word is not one you know, try something else. That is the real method.
Some teams are their own sound
Oo in moon is not "oh" and not "oo" as in book. Some teams just have to be learned as themselves.
Two ways to make a long vowel
Silent e does it from the end. A vowel team does it right there. Cake and rain both have a long a.
